shem שֵׁם
name; reputation; fame
Begin by reading Genesis 12:1-3 and Philippians 2:5-11. Notice how God's promise to make Abraham's name great climaxes in the Name of Jesus.
The Heart of This Word
שֵׁם (shem) is more than a label; it is the essence of a person's character, authority, and reputation. To know God's shem is to know Him truly.

The Tetragrammaton and "The Name" In later Jewish tradition, the divine Name became so revered that it was simply referred to as הַשֵּׁם (HaShem): "The Name." This linguistic shorthand protects the holiness of the Tetragrammaton (יהוה, YHWH) while acknowledging that no single word can contain the "weight" of God's character. When the New Testament says Jesus has been given "the name that is above every name," it is declaring that the authority and essence of הַשֵּׁם (HaShem) now rest fully and visibly in Christ (Phil 2:9).
The Authority of the Proxy To act "in the name of" (בְּשֵׁם, be-shem) another is a legal and linguistic reality. It means to stand in the shoes of the one who sent you, carrying their full authority. When David ran toward Goliath בְּשֵׁם יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת (in the name of the LORD of hosts), he wasn't shouting a magic word: he was acting as the authorized proxy for the King of Israel's armies (1 Sam 17:45). This provides the "weight" behind our own prayers: we do not approach the Father on our own merits, but as authorized proxies in the Name of Jesus.
Through Scripture's Story
Genesis 11:4: At Babel, the creature cries, "Let us make a name (shem) for ourselves." This is the original theft: trying to build a reputation that survives without God.
Genesis 12:2: In response, God calls a wanderer and promises, "I will make your name great." Identity is never achieved: it is always received as a gift.
Deuteronomy 12:5: God causes His Name to dwell in the Tabernacle. Wherever His Name rests, His presence is pledged. The name is the anchor of His accessibility.
Proverbs 18:10: "The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous run into it and are safe." The Name is not a theoretical concept but a fortress. Safety is found not by thinking about the tower, but by entering it.
For the Reader
Understanding shem helps us grasp the immense privilege of prayer and the profound identity we have in Christ. It shifts our focus from our own performance to the authority of the One who sends us.
How This Points to Christ
John 17:6: Jesus does not merely carry the Name: He is the Word made flesh who translates the Father's character into human history. The Cross is the definitive spelling of the Divine Name. There, the character of God, His justice, mercy, and steadfast love, is written in blood.
Philippians 2:9: Because He bore the shame of our self-made names, He has been highly exalted to the place of supreme authority. He has been given the Name above every name so that every knee should bow.
For Your Soul
Every heart is a Babel, feverishly trying to build a name that will not crumble. We navigate life with the broken instruments of our own reputation, terrified that we will be forgotten or found wanting. But in Christ, the pressure of "making a name" is put to death.
You no longer have to build a monument to your existence. Through the miracle of grace, you have been given a new shem that is anchored in His unshakeable renown. When you pray "in His Name," you are not pleading your own worth: you are standing in His. You bear the Name that the darkness cannot extinguish and death cannot erase. Rest today in the high favor of being known by Him.
